 Post subject: run time error 8020

Hi all, my simply pats has just started to give the above error when I try to downlod data from my Metrel OmegaPAT same Mc. Same Program just this error code. then when I confirm OK it closes the program.

Error 8020 refers to a communication issue and generally means that SimplyPats can not find any free COM ports on the PC.

The cause of the problem could be down to one or more of the following;

• The PC does not have a Physical COM Port (RS232 9 Pin connecter, generally on the rear of the PC).
• The PC has a Physical COM Port but there is a Hardware or Software (Driver) fault.
• There is other software blocking the COM Port which in turn is stopping communication.

If you are using a USB to Serial Converter, this brings a whole host of additional issues, I have written another forum post regarding USB to Serial Converters which you can read by clicking on the following link;

You have posted in the SimplyPats Version 4 and Below forum so I am going to assume that you are using an old version of the software.

If so I would recommend that you seriously consider the upgrade to SimplyPats Version 6 if you want to run SimplyPats on a modern day PC and/or use a USB to Serial Converter. SimplyPats Version 4 or below really isn’t up to the job or a suitable solution for modern day PAT Testing with Modern day technology.

Other reasons for upgrading include continued support and of course more importantly critical updates, especially those that address Firmware updates which may have been applied to your PAT Tester.

I would just like to add, please feel free to contact support by phone if you would like us to go though any obvious solutions.
