Windows 8 and SimplyPats

Today we managed to get hold of a Pre Release Copy of Windows 8 the new Microsoft Operating System and install it on a spare PC. We beleive that Windows 8 isn't due for launch until the end of 2012 at the earliest?

Having installed windows 8, we then set about installing SimplyPats. After a few tweaks it appears that SimplyPats 6 will run on Windows 8.

Just one word of caution, when we tested SimplyPats 5 with the pre release versions of Windows 7, everything went just fine, however when the first full commercial release of Windows 7 we then started having issues.

We will continue to check SimplyPats with Windows 8 as later pre release versions are available.

SimplyPats Windows 8 Compatibility

We have today installed a later Preview copy of Microsoft Windows 8 (tm). (Build 8400) to check the compatibility of Simplypats 6 with this new operating system.

Currently simplyPats will not install or run on Microsoft Windows 8 (tm). We are having to purchase upgrades of the components and install programs used by SimplyPats to see whether we can get it to work.

We will continue to post as we find out more about any compatibility issues.

SimplyPats and Windows 8

Over the past few months we have been working to make SimplyPats compatible with Windows 8.

SimplyPats 6 will not work with Windows 8 in it's current form due specifically to changes where files are stored in the operating system although there are several other changes to the way windows 8 works that causes issues.

It is likely that we will have to release a new revision of SimplyPats, i.e. SimplyPats 7 which will install on Windows 8. This will be backwardly compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP, however it will definitely not run on any earlier Microsoft Operating Systems e.g. Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows NT.

One of the main changes in SimplyPats 7 is where the SimplyPats data files, custom reports, photos, invoices, price schemes, backups, raw data are stored, along with the settings files for abbreviations, dictionary, price lists, pat tester settings, Default Fail Reasons, Print Sequences, Colour schemes etc.

Currently these files are stored in the Program Files folders, c:\Program Files (x86)\SimplyPats 6

All user data associated with SimplyPats 7 will be stored in the Application Data folder specific to the user.

For example in XP

C:\Documents and Settings\MyUser\Application Data

When will SimplyPats 7 be Released?

We are currently waiting for the IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (4th Edition) due in November 2012 to see if there are any recomendations that need to be included in the release of SimplyPats 7. Currently we have no definitive knowledge as to what the revisions may be.
We would hope to release SimplyPats 7 in early 2013 however this may be affected by the complexity of any changes in the 4th Edition of the IET Code Of Practice.

How Much Will an upgrade to SimplyPats 7 cost?

It is too early to say, however as you may be aware, we have not charged support fee's for SimplyPats in the past 10 years. When SimplyPats 6 was released at the beginning of 2010 we charged a nominal fee to upgrade from the previous version SimplyPats 5 for almost a year. We are likely to repeat this model, so that anyone recently purchasing a copy of SimplyPats 6 is not faced with any costs upgrading.

Users of older SimplyPats versions from 7 to 12 years old will still receive a discount when upgrading, although this discount will get progressively larger if they have upgraded to a newer version.

I have bought a Windows 8 PC and need software now!

If you buy a Windows 8 pc before we have officially released SimplyPats 7, we will get you up and running although it may be a beta version of the software.

Hi Richard,

Good to hear that SP7 will still be able to operate on Vista/Win7 rather than having to rely on upgrading to Win8.

From what I have read so far, and even as late as today, the real benefit that anybody will get from WIN8 is if they purchase a whole new hardware system particularly when WIN8 is now gearing towards a touch screen mentallity. The "Apple Foundation" and its supporters are jumping up and down with glee as they look forward to an increase in sales.

Even the "Start" button down in the LHS corner of the "normal" screen will be removed. For some older "silver hairs" like me this will be a bit too much to swallow. Even now I don't have one of those new fangled aplet riddled touch screen phones let alone change to the new WIN8 system which will be encouraging users to do. I won't be changing to the new WIN8 system.

Hi Glenn

Thanks for your post. Yes SimplyPats 7 will still run on XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Windows 8, it is kinda wierd, being a self confessed luddite I hate change at the best of times and Windows 8 is quite changed!

I have complained at every new operating system as I have had change to. I even remember complaining about changing from using DOS and having to use Windows 3.0, Windows 95 almost made me apoplectic!

Programming a product such as SimplyPats which has been through so many different Windows versions over the past 12 or so years has certainly been amusing, often like trying to nail jelly to the wall to deal with the changes they have made.

As you say the system seems designed to support touch screen and also familiar features such as the Start menu have dissapeared.

Now having the feeling that my glass is not only half full but cracked with something odd and unidentifiable in the dregs at the bottom, there are some positives.... I think!

For the first time that I can remember in the last 10 years or so Im impressed by the sheer speed of Windows 8. Our test computer here starts up and shuts down really fast, like a rat up a drain pipe. Start simplyPats and it takes less than a second to load and as there are over 40,000 lines of code in SimplyPats that's kinda good to see.

Microsoft have also made sure that there is keyboard support, also being silver haired, and having spent a while learning microsoft short cut keys, using Windows 8 becomes alot easier for example you can just press ALT+F4 to close a window.

The search function is also super quick making it easy to find programs, folders or files.

Whether Windows 8 maintains its speed once you install more software and security updates remains to be seen.

Regards, Richard.

Windows 8 SimplyPats And USB to Serial Converter

Just as a point of information, today we have been checking whether the USB to Serial converters that we regularly supply for use with SimplyPats are compatible with Windows 8.

The USB to Serial converters we have supplied for the last 10 years contain the FTDI chipset and as such are the same as those recomended by the PAT tester manufactuers.

The converters install just fine on Windows 8, and the PAT testers we trialled seemed to download without a hitch.
