You have installed a USB to Serial Converter, but SimplyPats reports that no COM ports are available.

This is a common problem that can be easily resolved.

SimplyPats Version 5 (V5.2.2) will only search up to COM port 10 when looking for available COM ports. We may increase this in the future, however in the mean time, please follow the instructions below.

Depending on software installed on your computer or other “hot pluggable” hardware, when you install your USB to Serial Converter it may be allocated a COM port over COM 10. If this is the case, you will need to manually change the COM port so it’s COM 10 or below.

We would recommend that you ask your I.T. professional to do this, however if you are confident in doing this yourself, here are some instructions (Windows XP, however may be the same for other operating systems).

Go to “Device Manager” Start > Control Panel > System.

Click on the Hardware Tab and choose Device Manager.

Under the heading Ports (COM & LPT) you should see your USB to Serial Converter listed. Right Click on its name and choose Properties.

Click on the Port Settings Tab and choose Advanced.

You should now see the COM port listed, click on the “Combo Box” and select the lowest COM port that is not already in use. Click OK and close all the screens.

Now open SimplyPats and check available COM ports by going to Settings > System Settings.

Generally speaking, if you unplug your USB to Serial Converter and plug it back in, Windows will allocate another COM port. We recommend that you leave your USB to Serial Converter plugged in if you are using your PAT Tester to download your data on a regular basis.
