Is it possible to download the data via the RS232 port and serial to USB connector to a windows 7 machine without having specialist software? I only want the details and results downloaded as a file as I can write my own program to display them as I want.

Kinda an odd question for our forum as we write software to download the data from the majority of pat testers on the market.

The simple answer is yes, for some of the PAT manufacturers downloading the data is reasonably straight forward. However, some manufacturer's can compress or tokenise their data, or require that the software and the tester enter into some handshaking conversation in order to download.

I have known some PAT testing companies that have used the program Hyperterminal(tm) to connect and download data from the PAT. Strangely Windows 7 doesn't come with Hyperterminal(tm) as part of the operating system.

The only issues you will have once you have got the correct download parameters (baud rate, stop bits, data bits, parity, hardware handshaking protocol etc) is to then decode the output so that you can import it into your program, database or spreadsheet.

I guess one of the reasons for buying specialist software is that it takes the effort out of re inventing the wheel, also hopefully it has many more features in it that speed up the process of testing and mainting your data.

Richard.
