PAT Testing on ships

Postby aberdeenpattesting » Tue Jul 06, 2010 11:05 am

Hi has anyone any experience of using prime test 300 on a ship?
What are the issues to think of regarding the floating earth of the boat and no grounded earth?
Are Rcd's a problem to test?

Any advice would be usefull.

thanks in advance

Hi Steven,

As no one has replied to your post as yet, Ive sent a couple of private messages to a couple of people on our forum who I believe have had experience of PAT testing on boats and ships.

Hopefully they will reply to this thread once they have got the private message.

I know of a company that does the PAT testing on some of the oil support vessels that are berthed in Aberdeen so Im sure they have come across any issues their might be.

Regards, Richard.

Hi Richard & Steven
I have PA Tested on ships berthed in several ports in Scotland plus in Holland and found no problems. We used Megger PAT4. We never did any physical test on RCD's so cant help there. Hope this helps. Alex

Hi Steven,

I have also carried out PAT on board a number of ships in port at Falmouth, and have had no problems with getting correct and proper data sets. We use the Megger PAT4 as well.

regards

Nick.

Thanks the ship in question is a norwegian boat and not a 3 pin plug in sight. Everything has euro 2 pin plugs. I have an adapter so that shouldnt be a problem. I was wondering though about the many IT equipment and even the Tv's, DVD players etc in the cabins will be 110Volt. But I guess as long as I do an IT (soft test) on these there should be no issue?
